Firmware is the quiet killer of small-business networks. Not the dramatic kind — the slow kind. A gateway a year behind on firmware, an AP with a known stability bug, an NVR running a release nobody remembers installing. Each one is survivable. Together they become the “it’s just flaky” network.
The fix isn’t heroics. It’s a cadence.
The one-week rule
The simplest rule that works: never install firmware the day it drops. Never skip it forever.
Ubiquiti’s release channels exist for a reason. The discipline we use:
- Wait one week after a new release appears on the official channel.
- Read the release notes for regressions affecting your gear (models matter — a fix for UDM-Pro doesn’t always help UAP-AC-Lite).
- Stage in a maintenance window — cameras and phones can survive a blip; your POS terminal and phone system should not.
- Update in dependency order: gateway → switches → APs → NVR/cameras.
- Verify after each stage — Wi-Fi clients reconnect, cameras re-register, playback still works.
What “hygiene” means beyond updating
Firmware is the trigger, but the routine is the point. A good 30-day cycle includes:
- Backup before any update — UniFi makes config backups trivial; take one before every staged change. Restore-from-backup is the difference between a 10-minute fix and a 4-hour rebuild.
- A device inventory that’s current — you can’t plan firmware for devices you forgot you had.
- A change log — what updated, when, what channel, any notes. Six months of change logs is the difference between “what happened?” and “we know exactly what happened.”
- A health check after — client counts, PoE draw, camera status, WAN throughput. If the update changed behavior, you want to catch it in the window, not next quarter.
The drift trap
The danger isn’t skipping one cycle — it’s the “set it and forget it” state where nobody has updated anything in 14 months, and now the network is three major releases behind with no rollback path.
If you inherit a network like that (and we do, regularly), the safe recovery isn’t “update everything today.” It’s: baseline → backup → update one device class → verify → repeat over a few weeks.
