The UDM Pro and UDM SE look identical in a rack and run the same routing engine. The difference is the ports you plug into them — and that difference decides which one is right for your business. Here’s the honest comparison.
The 30-second version
- Same brain: both do 3.5 Gbps IPS routing, support 100+ UniFi devices and 1,000+ clients, and run the full UniFi suite (Network, Protect, Access, Talk).
- The SE adds two things the Pro doesn’t have: PoE on its switch ports and a 2.5G WAN port.
- The Pro is the cheaper entry (~$379 list vs ~$499 for the SE) and makes sense when you already have — or are buying — a proper PoE switch.
- Buy the SE if you want PoE without a separate switch, or if your internet plan is faster than 1 Gbps.
Same brain, different ports
Both gateways are 1U rack units running the same core hardware. Same 3.5 Gbps IPS throughput. Same device and client ceilings. Same built-in 3.5” drive bay for UniFi Protect recording. If you only ever use the WAN, LAN, and SFP+ ports, they’re the same machine.
The differences are all on the RJ45 side:
UDM Pro
- 8× GbE switch ports, no PoE
- 1× 10G SFP+ WAN, 1× 10G SFP+ LAN
- 1× GbE WAN port
UDM SE
- 8× GbE switch ports, all PoE (128W budget, PoE+ on four)
- 1× 10G SFP+ WAN, 1× 10G SFP+ LAN
- 1× 2.5G WAN port
That’s the entire delta: PoE and a faster copper WAN port. Everything else is identical.
When the SE is the right call
You want PoE without buying a switch. A handful of UniFi cameras or access points can be powered straight off the SE. For a small office or retail shop running 2–6 PoE devices, the SE is the network — no extra switch, no extra rack space, one box to manage.
Your internet is faster than 1 Gbps. Multi-gig fiber plans are common now, and the Pro’s copper WAN port caps at 1 GbE. The SE’s 2.5G WAN lets a 2 Gbps plan actually be 2 Gbps.
You’re camera-first. The built-in drive bay plus PoE on the switch ports makes the SE a tidy all-in-one for Protect: cameras powered and recorded by the same unit.
When the Pro is the better buy
You’re building around a real switch anyway. If you need more than 8 PoE ports — and most growing businesses do — you’re buying a PoE switch regardless. In that case the Pro plus a switch (a Lite or Flex model covers most small deployments) is cheaper than the SE alone, and you get clean headroom for expansion.
You already have PoE infrastructure. Existing switch, existing injectors, or a managed setup where the gateway is strictly the router. Paying for PoE you won’t use is paying for nothing.
Budget matters more than one port. The Pro’s ~$120 savings buy a decent switch or a spare drive. For a network that’s planned properly, that’s the better spend.
The three questions
Answer these and you’re done:
- Do I need to power PoE devices directly from the gateway? Yes → SE. No → Pro.
- Is my internet plan above 1 Gbps? Yes → SE. No → doesn’t matter.
- Am I buying a PoE switch anyway? Yes → Pro + switch. No → SE.
If you answered “no” to all three, the Pro is the right buy — and honestly, so is the UDM (non-Pro) for many small offices. Don’t overspend on a rack gateway because it looks the part.
The mistake we see most
The SE gets bought for its PoE, and then the business outgrows 8 ports within a year — cameras get added, another AP goes in, and suddenly there’s a switch bolted onto the SE anyway. The $120 premium wasn’t the problem; the missing growth plan was.
The reverse mistake: buying the Pro to save money, then running cameras through cheap injectors daisy-chained behind the rack. That’s how you get a camera that silently stops recording and nobody notices until it matters.
The takeaway
Same routing core, two port layouts. PoE on the switch and a 2.5G WAN are the SE’s entire premium — buy it when you’ll actually use them. Otherwise the Pro (plus a real switch when you need one) is the honest pick for most small businesses.
